  1. Adjustment for BMI, smoker years and bird intake did not further change the data.
  2. The overall association between the POP markers and xenohormone transactivity across the study groups were evaluated using multiple linear regressions analysis. Homogeneity across the districts was observed (see Additional file 1) and to improve the statistical power and the overall trend of the study groups the combined male and female data across the districts was evaluated.
  3. *: The combined data of Sisimiut and Qaanaaq men was significantly negatively correlated to non-adjusted as well as age adjusted POPs.
  4. -: The data of the single districts were not adjusted for lifestyle characteristics because of the few cases in each district (n = 31 – 40).
